Official Opening of the New Idrija Mining Route: A Successful Cultural and Sporting Event

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, an important cultural and sporting event took place in the beautiful setting of the Idrija municipality, marking the official opening of a new itinerary tracing the footsteps of the miners of this historic mining town. This route celebrates over 500 years of history, incorporating a unique technical, cultural, and sacred heritage that stands as a testament to centuries of mining in the region.

The initiative was part of the international project of the European Mining Routes of Santa Barbara Federation – MINES.B, of which CUDHg Idrija is a partner. The event was the result of collaboration between various entities and organizations committed to enhancing Europe’s mining heritage. The route, designed to promote awareness of Idrija’s mining history, offers visitors the opportunity to explore the area from a unique perspective, focusing on history, culture, and mining engineering.

The day began at 9:00 AM with a three-hour bike ride that involved cyclists of all ages. Thanks to a sunny morning, participants were able to immerse themselves in the landscape and the mining heritage, appreciating the historical and natural beauty of the area. The event was a great success, leaving a positive impression on the many cyclists present, confirming the importance of initiatives that combine sports, culture, and sustainable tourism.

A special thanks goes to the Sloga 1902 Cycling Club and its president, Leon Prezlj, for their essential contribution to organizing the ride. Additionally, we would like to express our gratitude to Velo Center Idrija, which provided a modern, reliable, and eco-friendly electric bike, highlighting their commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.

This event demonstrated how cooperation and connection between different partners can lead to the creation of projects with great cultural and tourist value. The new thematic route not only celebrates Idrija’s mining tradition but also serves as an important attraction for both local and international tourism, strengthening the region’s historical identity and contributing to its sustainable growth.
